ORIGIN
OF NAME: The English 'Lether' seems to be originally from
the Saxon/Celt first name, 'Lothair' or 'Lethar'. The
families have changed the names to several different
versions including 'Lether', 'Leather', 'Leathers', etc.
They can still be found in Cheshire/Lancashire areas of
Britain as well as London, Birmingham, etc.
Spelling variations include: Lauder,
Laudor, Lawder, Lawther, Leather, Lauther and others.
First found in Berwickshire where they
were seated from very ancient times, some say well
before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke
William at Hastings in 1066 A.D.
Some of the first settlers of this
name or some of its variants were: George Lauder
settled in Virginia in 1716; John and Sarah Lauder
settled in Belfast Maine in 1820.
